A first-visit bounce is almost never about "bad design". It is one of the seven specific reasons below, and each can be checked within an hour.
1. It is unclear what the product is
The headline describes technology or a vague value ("we change how teams work") but not who it is for. Check: show the screen to three strangers for 5 seconds and ask what you sell.
2. Slow load on mobile
You look at the site on fast Wi-Fi; the user is on 4G on a train. Check: mobile-profile LCP, first-screen weight, hero image compression.
3. Signup demanded too early
Value is not shown yet, but email and password are already required. Check: can a visitor get one useful result without an account, even in demo mode?
4. No price and no explanation
"Contact us" instead of a number on a self-serve product is a bounce. Check: does the pricing page show at least a range and what is included?
5. The form breaks silently
The validation error sits at the top of the page, the field is not highlighted, the button shows no loading state. Check: submit a broken form on a phone and see if it is obvious what to fix.
6. No sign that humans are behind it
No company name, no address, no real faces, no last-updated date. People do not pay an anonymous template. Check: find a way to reach a human within 10 seconds.
7. The second screen ignores the objection
After the promise comes a feature list instead of answering "why me, and why should I trust you". Check: ask a tester for their main doubt and look for its answer on the page.
How to check all of it at once
Reasons 2 and 5 are measured automatically; the rest need a human seeing your product for the first time. Landing page audit checklist · How it works
